External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar highlighted the pivotal role of conventional troop deployment in restoring normalcy and shaping the future relationship between India and China. Speaking during an interaction with the Indian diaspora in Kuala Lumpur, Jaishankar emphasized the significance of securing the border as a priority, underscoring that every relationship must be founded on certain principles.

Jaishankar reiterated ongoing negotiations with China, including discussions between military commanders, aimed at restoring traditional troop deployment along the Line of Actual Control (LAC). He emphasized the importance of adhering to agreements and maintaining stability in the border region to avoid conflicts and violence.

The External Affairs Minister reflected on the historical context of India-China relations, noting that despite the boundary dispute, both countries had previously agreed not to deploy large numbers of troops near the border. This understanding, established in the late 1980s and reflected in various agreements, had contributed to stability and progress in other areas of the relationship.

However, Jaishankar pointed out that this understanding was disrupted in 2020, resulting in violence and bloodshed during the Galwan Valley confrontation. The incident marked a significant deterioration in bilateral relations, leading to heightened tensions between the two nations.

The remarks by Jaishankar underscore India’s firm stance on border security and the importance of upholding agreements to ensure stability and peaceful coexistence with China. The restoration of normalcy in troop deployment along the LAC is viewed as a crucial step toward improving relations and addressing longstanding issues between the two countries.
